As a result of the high global demand for wines in recent years, many wine makers have turned to chemicals to protect their vineyards from pests and other insects. There has also been a trend to add chemical fertilizers to the soil and the plants as a means to enhance the yield of grape crops.
The most widely used method to protect fruit from an attack of insect pests is to spray the fruit itself with insecticide. Similarly weeds which interfere with the grape vines are often sprayed with herbicide. However, recently people have started to realize the dangers of these practices and are demanding more use of organic products. Organic wines are now being produced in ever increasing quantities and have already become as established part of the wine industry.
There are distinct advantages to the consumer when buying and drinking organic wines.
Firstly, organic wine is a reflection of the clean earth from which the vines are harvested. Chemical residue from insecticides and herbicides sprayed on the fruits and plants gets absorbed by the soil and this in turn reaches the plants via their roots. Organic wines avoid this problem and make for a natural soil environment for the plant life of the vineyards.
Secondly, those of us who buy organic wine are guaranteed chemical free beverages to drink. This results in less risk of sickness and diseases caused by chemicals we ingest through the wines.
While organic wines may cost a bit as a result of the extra time and effort required to maintain vineyards, there are many long term benefits from a safe and environmentally secure earth.
Some good wine judges claim that organic wine tastes better than those grown the conventional way. This could be because without the use of chemicals the organic wine vineyard has less yield resulting in a more concentrated flavor in the grapes that are produced. So another advantage of organic wine – better flavor than conventionally prepared wines.
There is a lot of emphasis these days on protecting the environment and that should be sufficient reason to patronize organic wines. There is only one Earth and if we do not look after it there will be no wine at all so let’s all get on then organic wine bandwagon.
